Rules for water polo

The sport is played all over the world and was in fact the first Olympic team sport. FINA WP rules as well as interpretations for Water Polo Canada. The referee indicates fouls by blowing a whistle and using hand signals to point out the location of the foul and the attacking direction of the fouled player.


Understanding the rules is an important part of playing (or watching) water polo. Please find below an overview of the changes and explanation in regards to the application and interpretation of the ‘new’ Rules plus some applications of the ‘existing or old’ Rules. Water polo games are conducted in accordance with FINA rules. Water polo is the only ball sport among the aquatics disciplines. At the bottom of the page is a link to the official US Water Polo rules. All players must present their valid U of S student card to participate in any Campus Rec sports league.
